Psalm 23

Will you share your thoughts with me on the 23rd Psalm representing the different attributes of God.(such as Jehovah Jira, etc.)
A Psalm of David.

(NOTE) This is considered a Messianic Psalm. Christ is the Good Shepherd. Not quoted in NT.

1 The LORD [Jehovah, the self existent One] is my (Adonim is Jehovah as owner) shepherd; [Jehovah Raah] I shall not want. (Jehovah Jireh - Jehovah will provide).
2 He makes me (Adon is Jehovah as overlord or ruler) to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul: (El Shaddai, is Jehovah the All Sufficient One) he leads me in the paths of righteousness (Jehovah Tsidkenu - Jehovah our Righteousness) for his name’s sake. (Isaiah 42:8 “I am the LORD [Jehovah]: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another”)
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, [deep darkness] (El Roi, Jehovah is the Strong One Who Sees) I will fear no evil: (El Elyon is Jehovah the Strongest Strong One). for thou are with me; (I [Jehovah] will never leave nor forsake the believer, Heb. 13:5) thy rod (Jehovah Nakeh is Jehovah that smites) and thy staff they comfort me. (II Cor. 1:3 “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort”)
5 Thou prepare a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anoint my head with oil; my cup (Filled with blessings.) runs over. (Adonai is the Strong Faithful One and is Jehovah as blesser)
6 Surely goodness (Ps. 31:19 “Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou have laid up for them that fear thee”) and mercy (Ps. 66:20 “Blessed be God, which has not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.”) shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD [Jehovah] for ever. (Jehovah Shammah - Jehovah who is present)

There is one main characteristic of God that David does not mention, but I know he knew it. God is Love. Jehovah has many names in the Old Testament that describe his character. Read my RHL Bible Doctrine Study Notes (God_names_of)

In the Bible: The Father is Jehovah: Ex. 3:14 “I AM THAT I AM” (i.e. I Am Jehovah the eternal one)

The Son is Jehovah: Zech. 12:10. cf. John 19:37 "they shall look upon me (Jehovah, Zech. 12: 8) whom they have pierced." Jesus is the great, I AM. John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. Jesus' name means "Jehovah Saves."

The Holy Spirit is Jehovah: Isa. 6:8-9 cf. Acts 28:25 “Well spoke the Holy Ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers.” Also see Jer. 31:31-35 cf. Heb. 10:15-16.

God is all the virtues that there are. I tried to stay with the names God from the Old Testament in answering your question. Christ is God so I could also have used all the virtues of Christ which are the same as the Fathers and used hundreds of verses from the New Testament.

This Psalm is written by David a believer for believers. (God is only the Father of those that have been born again) The LORD is MY Shepherd. You must make it personal.

Since I do not know those that write to me I want to explain what it means to be a Christian.

It is putting your faith (trust) in Jesus alone for your salvation. You do not get to Heaven by trying, but by trusting in Christ for what He has done on the Cross. As our substitute He died for us and paid the price that we can never pay, Death. Rom. 6:23 “The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal Life. Salvation is a gift.” The one that gives the gift pays for it, all the receiver does is take it and say thanks. Read Romans 3: 22 through 5:1 and NOTES in my RHL Bible NT.

Thank you so much for your question. I pray that this answers your question.
